Basic soap making supplies

Making soap can seem so daunting and scary. While you do need a few safety precautions and precise measurements, it’s not as scary as it may sound.

Here, I have compiled a list of very basic soap making supplies. I bet you have most of these things at home. If not, you can follow the links to the supplies I have suggested.

First thing is first - safety.

You will need:

  • gloves to protect your hands from lye

  • safety glasses (if you wish, I have been careful enough that I haven’t used them and it hasn’t been an issue)

Next is the oils. You will need to determine what oils you want to use in your soap. This is a whole lengthy post in itself but for the purpose of this post we will just make a basic bar of soap. In which case you’ll need:

  • coconut oil

  • olive oil

  • lard or tallow

You can usually buy these right from the grocery section of your local store or order them from Amazon.

Lye or sodium hydroxide can also be found on Amazon.

I use an old pot for melting the oils. A small silicone spatula, plastic measuring cups for mixing the oils with colorant (if you so wish) all from the dollar tree.

Other things you will need are:

  • kitchen scale

  • thermometer, infared one is best - no clean up!

  • immersion blender

  • mold of some sort - an old pan lined with wax paper…?

  • jar or bowl for mixing sodium hydroxide and water

  • distilled water

  • mica powder or other colorant (optional)

  • Fragrance - I use brambleberry brand, they have already done the work and takes the guess work out of it!

I will do a whole post about that as well, stay tuned!

So there you have it, the very basics you need to start soap making!

No need for fancy things just as long as they are functional. Here’s the list of things I have for soap making but remember as long as you have the basic supplies you can start today.
